I will always be a big believer in repelling the wrong clients.
Last week, I had some awesome conversations with an LGBTQ+ speaker, a website designer for speakers, and a speaker strategist.
We bonded over shared identities, the work we do, the struggles we have, and how we love the speaking industry.
And the entrepreneur and marketer in me thought about how many valuable nuggets were in these conversations that other folks in the speaking industry could benefit from.
Like how we need more LGBTQ+ speakers (and for them to get fairly compensated).
And how changing the language on your speaking website from first person to third person is important to positioning yourself.
And no matter how far the industry has come in bringing in diverse voices, it still has a ways to go—and how we want to be apart of that change.
My speaker friend uses his platform and voice to advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusive healthcare.
My website designer friend is vocal about her personal values and uses that to filter out the folks who don’t share the same values.
My new speaker strategist friend is intentional about working with underrepresented speakers.
And I’m vocal about being an queer and trans person, and that attracts people who are supportive of people like me and repels those who are not (thank god).
I’m sharing this with you intentionally over email—and I’m not posting it to my LinkedIn or Instagram.
Why? Because there’s a different level of trust here.
It’s like writing a letter to a friend vs. posting to a billboard for anyone to see.
This why I like email so much.
We can be more vulnerable, connect more deeply, and build community.
Is that what you want too?
If you’re looking to write more letters and fewer billboards, then let’s have a chat about how to make that happen.
You can grab a time on my calendar here.
