10 years ago today, I was making my way back home from a deployment to the Middle East.
I was 21 years old.
Most of my non-military friends were finishing up their third year of college, celebrating their 21st birthdays at the bar, and figuring out they’re first “adult” job.
Whereas I was looking at starting my second year of college after 3 semesters away and readjusting to life back home.
That’s when it hit me. After about a year and a half away from home (for training and a deployment), I changed.
When I returned home, I couldn’t relate to my friends as much as I could before.
Being away from home in a foreign place, managing a public affairs office, and dealing with my own internal struggle with my gender identity was a situation few could understand.
It wasn’t anyone’s fault, it was just the circumstances we were in.
Still, I knew I needed to recreate my life back home.
I made new friends, took on leadership roles in a student organization, started my medical transition, and changed my major to cultural entrepreneurship.
Moral of the story:
I adapted to my circumstances and changed what was within my control.
Did I screw up a time or two doing it? For sure.
Did I try adjust and try again? No doubt.
In fact, I’ve found the same thing applies to speakers who are growing their speaking business.
Many command the stage beautifully, but when it comes to the business of speaking…
Let’s just say there is room for improvement.
The circumstance is that you are an amazing speaker, but may be struggling to get paid, raise your fee, or market yourself well.
And what’s in your control? Finding the people who can help you with the business while you continue to improve your craft.
I had to find new friends, opportunities, and a new area of study to grow.
Maybe it’s time for you to make some changes to grow too.
